Please send no more than 5 pieces, 10 pages maximum, uploaded as a single file. You may include more than one piece on a single page, but be sure to clearly mark the beginning of each piece. We are open to work that takes the shape of basically any format: words, recordings, visual art, hybrid forms, etc.
We do not categorize work by genre, so please do not tell us what genre you're sending us (if you know). If you include a cover letter (welcome, but not required), you might say something along the lines of “included are three pieces of writing” rather than “three prose poems.”
All submissions should be sent to the editors at firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject line “SUBMISSION” along with the number of pieces you are sending (e.g. “SUBMISSION — 3 PIECES”). Do not put your name on the actual submission document, although you should include it in the body of your email.
Also in the body of your email: include a short, third-person bio, to be featured alongside any piece or pieces accepted for publication. Feel free to include a description/explanation of your work as well, although this is not required.
We love ambiguity: flash pieces, found pieces, cross-genre experiments, the "poem" that thinks it might be a story, the "story" that thinks it might be a poem. We love work that creates feeling and action through careful phrasing and lyric forms. Writing that works to scrutinize, critique, and/or chip away at institutional structures. Retellings and reimaginings. Work that breaks everything down so that it can build.
We are especially interested in work by genderqueer & LGBTQ+ people, women, POC, global writers, etc. We are open to translated original work.
Send us the stuff you’re excited about. We accept submissions on a rolling basis.
We will never take longer than 3 months to respond.
Simultaneous submissions are welcome. Let us know if your submission is accepted for publication elsewhere before we're able to get back to you. Please only send previously unpublished work. We ask for first rights, and we ask that any future publications of accepted work will acknowledge A VELVET GIANT.
Please wait until you hear back to send us more work.
We will provide feedback on rejected submissions if requested.
